BLOOD TESTS

• Active B12- this is the biologically active part of B12 which is needed for cells to function

• MMA (methylmalonic acid) high levels indicate B12 deficiency. It is a good indicator of B12

deficiency.

• Homocysteine-a raised level of this amino acid is often associated with low levels of B12 and Folate. Raised levels are also considered a risk factor for heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease and cancer.

• Ferritin- is a protein that stores and releases iron. Iron is used for the production of red blood cells and is required for many other metabolic pathways. About two-thirds of the iron stores in the human body exist in the form of ferritin.

• Low ferritin is diagnostic of iron deficiency anaemia. High ferritin levels are associated with liver inflammation.

• Folate- Folate (Vitamin B9) is naturally present in many foods such as vegetables, fruits and grains. It is needed for the body to produce DNA, which is why it is so critical during pregnancy. Vitamin B12, and folate are responsible for helping maintain a healthy nervous system. B12 and folate work together.

• Symptoms of vitamin B12, folate, and iron deficiency include chronic fatigue, lethargy, breathlessness, feeling faint, headaches, heart palpitations, tinnitus and weight loss.

• Symptoms of vitamin B12deficiency may also include pale yellow tinged skin, a sore and red tongue, mouth ulcers, depression and low mood, pins and needles, tingling, tremor, brittle nails, ridges on nails, visual problems, lack of concentration, forgetfulness, psychosis, post natal depression, Symptoms mimicking Parkinson's and MS.

• Iron deficiency symptoms, though less common, include headaches, tinnitus, an altered sense of taste, feeling itchy, a sore or abnormally smooth tongue, hair loss, difficulty swallowing, ulcers on the corners of your mouth and spoon shaped nails.

• Vitamin D- Is required for healthy bones, teeth and muscles. It also is important for our immune system. chronic diseases and mental health. Vitamin D has been associated with cancer, cardiovascular disease and rickets in children and osteoporosis in adults.

• We need the sun to help absorb Vitamin D. We can find Vitamin D in foods such as oily fish, red meat, liver and egg yolks. Vitamin D deficiency is common in the winter months when sun exposure is reduced. If you are suffering from any of the above then you need to consider these tests.
